What Is the Canadian Citizenship Test?
The Canadian citizenship test is a knowledge test that most permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 54 must pass as part of their application for Canadian citizenship. It's administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and based on the official study guide, Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship.
Who needs to take it? Applicants who are 18 to 54 years old on the day they sign their citizenship application generally need to take the knowledge test. Applicants under 18 or 55 and older are usually exempt from the knowledge test, as are applicants who qualify for another exemption.
Test format: Questions are typically multiple-choice or true/false. Whether you're tested online or at an in-person test centre depends on IRCC's current arrangements, so always check your latest notice from IRCC.
Number of questions: The standard test usually includes 20 questions covering Canadian history, government, the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, federal elections, the justice system, and national symbols.
Passing score: Applicants generally need to answer at least 15 of the 20 questions correctly (75%) to pass.
Time limit: Most applicants are given roughly 30 to 45 minutes to complete the test β check your official notice for the exact time allowed.
Because IRCC can update the test format and requirements at any time, always confirm the latest details on the official Government of Canada website while you use this site's materials to prepare.
